Media Covering-Up Venezuela?

Article in The Nation by Jack Mirkinson, 1/9/26

Headline:  “The Media’s Coverage of the Venezuelan Coup Has Been Dreadful”

Subhead:  “War may be the health of state, but it’s death to honest journalism.”

“We live in a turbulent, unpredictable world. Few things feel certain. But there are some truths we can hold fast to. The sun will rise. We’ll grow older each day. And the media will bend over backward to celebrate US imperialism.

“For evidence of this, just review the past week’s coverage of President Donald Trump’s illegal abduction and overthrow of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Once the kidnapping operation swung into gear, our most prominent newsrooms obediently adopted their time-honored patterns: indulging war lust, sidestepping or downplaying the rule of law, and uncritically cheerleading yet another violent foreign intervention by the US military. . .”

Did “60 Minutes” Lose Something?

Article in Status by Oliver Darcy, 1/8/26

Headline: “The Shadow Over ‘60’ “

Subhead:  “As Sharyn Alfonsi’s ’60 Minutes’ report remains shelved, Status has learned that an Anderson Cooper piece is also caught in a prolonged editorial review process, frustrating the veteran producer attached to the story.”

“Earlier this week, on Tuesday, members of the ’60 Minutes’ team gathered for a meeting to discuss the future of Sharyn Alfonsi’s delayed piece on migrants deported by Donald Trump’s administration to a notorious El Salvadorian prison. The segment, which had been slated for broadcast on December 21, was pulled from air at the eleventh hour by the network’s new MAGA friendly editor in chief, Bari Weiss. . .”

Buttoning Down the Media

Article in Poynter by Louis Jacobson, 1/8/26

Headline:  “A brief history of the media through political convention pins”

Subhead:  “Collect ‘em and trade ‘em … and watch how they trace the evolution and decline of legacy media brands”

“. . .Recently, I realized that some of my souvenirs from those conventions accidentally tell a story about the media’s evolution over the past three decades.

“The souvenirs I’m referring to are pins, mostly the size of the average thumbnail. Despite their modest size, these trinkets tell a story of the media’s proximity to power, the ebb and flow of journalistic resources and the media pecking order. . .”

Headline:  “Is Mad King Trump Losing His Sanity?”

Subhead: “Mad kings rarely stop themselves: They’re stopped when the opeopl; aroung decide the country matters more than the crown . . .”

“. . .When Trump held his press conference announcing the invasion of Venezuela and the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, a reporter asked the most basic question imaginable: Who is running Venezuela now and going forward. . .?

“. . .That moment should have set off loud alarms throughout Washington and should have shot across our media like a meteorite. Instead, it drifted by as simply another strange episode in a presidency that’s taught us to pretend the abnormal is now normal. . .”

“Pro-MAGA podcaster Dr. Drew Pinsky lashed out at reporters for believing President Donald Trump’s claim that he had an MRI procedure instead of being tested by CT scan equipment. . .”

Even More Duopoly Rules Discarded?

Article in Free Press by Staff, 12/31/25

Headline:  “Labor Unions and Media Justice Groups File Petition Urging the FCC to Reject Nexstar’s Proposed Takeover of Tegna“

“The petition to deny the transfer of broadcast licenses from TEGNA to Nexstar was filed by Free Press, the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians—Communications Workers of America (NABET-CWA), The NewsGuild—Communications Workers of America (TNG-CWA), the United Church of Christ Media Justice Ministry and Public Knowledge. In their filing the petitioners state that the merger would result in an illegal broadcast conglomerate, exceeding the 39-percent audience-reach ‘National Cap’ set by Congress.

“Though Nexstar and TEGNA seek a waiver of this limit, the commission is prohibited by law from waiving, altering, or eliminating this National Cap. . .”

Headline:  “The ‘TrumpKennedyCenter.org’ website is taken. This comedian owns it.”

“The organization’s leaders might have wanted a new website to replace kennedy-center.org, too. But if they’d hoped for trumpkennedycenter.org, they were out of luck. A comedian bought it months ago.

“As soon as Trump began gutting the Kennedy Center board earlier this year, I thought, ‘Yep, that name’s going on the building,’” explains Toby Morton, a comedy writer with ‘South Park’ and ‘Mad TV’ credits who buys political domains and turns them into satirical websites as a form of activism. . . .”

“Project 2025” and the Media

Article in Poynter by Angela Fu, 12/29/25

Headline:  “Here’s how many of Project 2025’s media proposals were implemented in 2025”

Subhead: “Outlets that received federal funding have been hit hardest, but even fully independent organizations have been affected”

“. . .Those goals include reforming the government’s relationship with the press. Indeed, many of Trump’s actions against journalists this year draw directly from Project 2025’s media proposals, and contributors to the project have played key roles in the administration’s attempts to stymie the press. Outlets that received federal funding — public broadcasters and United States Agency for Global Media affiliates — have been hit hardest. But even fully independent outlets have been affected. . .”

Not All Media Crashed and Burned

Article in The Guardian by Moira Donegan, 12/29/25

Headline:   “As the US media floundered this year, I couldn’t help but think: ‘Thank God I’m at the Guardian”

Subhead:  “Other outlets have asked their writers to compromise, but the Guardian has never – and would never – ask me to pull a punch”

“. . .On the other hand, US media organizations are also facing tremendous pressure from the Trump administration – and from Donald Trump personally, who has used a combination of frivolous defamation suits and weaponized regulatory agencies to extract vast sums from outlets that publish coverage he does not like and threaten the licenses of broadcasters who host voices critical of his movement. . .”
