Notes from the 1/11/20 video conference meeting

Because of the difficult road conditions due to bad weather, the meeting scheduled for this day has been rescheduled for Saturday 1/18/20, 2:00 PM at the KKFI annex room, 39^th & Main rear door.

Spencer Graves , and Tom Crane met at KKFI and Craig Lubow met remotely over computer.  The video conference was over Zoom software which worked well allowing video of everyone to be seen and heard.  Craig provided music during the conversation.

Spencer briefed us on possibly becoming an affiliate of ProPublica.  Potentially, an assistantship could be funded through this source for FCM with a local university.  This could possibly be done through NAIRC (National association for computer reporting).  Spencer has made contacts but has had no response.  This week, he will follow up with results for the 1/18 meeting.

It was suggested that we collaborate with the Kansas City Press Club, and Tom will follow up with them this week.

Proposed for a forum as mentioned earlier – “Media in a Time of War” – with Amy Goodman which could be a fundraiser for FCM and KKFI.  Tom will speak with Bill Clause on this to be reported on the 1/18 meeting.

Craig made some contacts for a presentation we had discussed earlier on “Religion and the Media”.  Looks like the All-Souls calendar is booked until March.  He will follow up on those contacts and speak with Richard about the All-Souls calendar.

Friends of Community Media is scheduled to meet 2 PM tomorrow, Saturday 1/11 but there is a major snow storm coming. Those with snowshoes are welcome to come to a possible video conference Spencer is setting up, with ProPublica. He will send info out to our group. Since some people can’t participate with this, FCM will meet next Saturday 1/18 at the KKFI Annex Room 39th & Main Rear Door at 2 PM.

One of America’s most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists, David Barsamian has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio—now in its 34th year—and his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. His latest books are with Noam Chomsky: Global Discontents: Rising Threats to Democracy and Edward Said: Culture and Resistance. He lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media and global rebellions.

David Barsamian is the winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU’s Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. The Institute for Alternative Journalism named him one of its Top Ten Media Heroes. He is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and the South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy. He has collaborated with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet in events in New York, London, Vienna, San Francisco and elsewhere.

Barsamian was deported from India due to his work on Kashmir and other revolts. He is still barred from traveling to “the world’s largest democracy.”

As a kid, David was a bit of a rebel and frequently played hooky from school. Growing up in New York in the shadow of the Armenian Genocide sparked an interest in history and politics. His first interview was with his mother, Araxie. He says, that interview was the most difficult he has ever done. He then went on to do a series of interviews with survivors.

He says he was further radicalized when his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team moved to Los Angeles. He said, “That’s all I needed to know about capitalism.”
